This post is of a personal nature. Finding ourselves at a time of life that is referred to as middle aged, many changes have come about. Some by choice, and others...well let's just say, not by choice.
Recently my husband has had to get dentures. The adjustment he has had to make has affected both of us, not just him. I never realized until now that it does a number on the spouse almost as much as the individual. I am putting all of his food in our mini blender to make it into an edible mush of sorts for him, it requires quite a bit of thought to come up with recipes that he can maneuver and that can be put into the little machine.
Kissing of course has come to a stand still, until his mouth is not so sore. But the thing that has affected me the most is what a good sport he has turned out to be. He has a sense of humor that I never appreciated before. For example, tonight when he took out his dentures, he put them into a container with some fizzy stuff that turned an aquatic shade of bluish green. I was watching a movie when he showed me this little container and he said, "hey, would you like to see my fishy?" At first I didn't realize that his dentures were in it, until I looked further and realized the pinkish thing floating inside were his dentures. I looked up at him and busted up laughing.
Then, he comes into the office and says to me, "would you do me a favor?" So I'm waiting for his request and he says, "would you bite my fingernails?" I bust out laughing again. He has turned into a regular stand up comedian, I swear. I never saw this side of him before, at least not quite like this. Growing older together, doesn't seem so hard when the other person can take it all in good stride. So if he can take it, I guess I can take it too.
